However, if there’s one thing Miriam has learned, it’s that love and war cannot coexist. But there’s another side to him, one that’s gentle and loving and dead set on winning her over, and she might not be strong enough to resist. Now, Miriam faces a terrifying future, one where she watches her world burn town by town, and the one man responsible for it all is her seemingly indestructible “husband”. But when the massive and terrifying horseman corners Miriam, he calls her his wife, and instead of killing her, he takes her back to his camp. There is no surviving this, especially not once Miriam catches the eye of War himself. Houses are burning, the streets run red with blood, and a traitorous army is massacring every last resident. The day Jerusalem falls, Miriam Elmahdy knows her life is over. They came to Earth, and they came to end us all. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to Earth - Pestilence, War, Famine, Death - four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world.

The characters were great as well, though I would have loved to get to know them a bit better. Instead, they let the reader figure it out on their own. The good: I loved that Tidbeck did not use the standard exposition you often see in dystopian fiction, where one character explains to another what is so bad about this world, in a hamfisted way. Soon, she is drawn into the resistance, but she also falls in love with a loyal citizen. Vanja, an information assistant from Essre, is sent to Amatka, one of the four colonies, to gather data for the company she works for. But the biggest problem is that inhabitants of the colonies have to label and name everything around them regularly, otherwise those objects, structures and people turn into goo that can dissolve everything around them. Of course there is a totalitarian regime in place, and while life seems ok on the surface, the citizens don’t have much freedom. The setting is an area that consists of four relatively small colonies. The premise of this book is somewhat interesting, though. It’s dystopian, which used to be my favorite genre, but after three years of running a dystopian/post-apocalyptic book club, it doesn’t interest me much anymore. I can’t remember why I decided to buy this book. Bingo: They she he (the author uses they/them pronouns, though there appear to be only cis characters in this book) Fluent in French and Spanish, he lived for various periods in Mexico, France, Italy, Spain, and the Soviet Union. His dramatically unorthodox career included stints as a laundry boy, an assistant cook, and a busboy he also served as a seaman on voyages to Europe and Africa. Hughes attended Columbia University between 19, and received his A.B. His father, James Nathaniel, was a businessman, and his mother, Carrie Langston Mercer, was a teacher. Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1902. It is not surprising, then, that Hughes was known, variously, as “Shakespeare in Harlem” and as the “poet laureate of the Negro.” He also translated Jacques Roumain, Nicolás Guillén, Gabriela Mistral, and Federico García Lorca, and wrote at least thirty plays. Between 1926, when he published his pioneering The Weary Blues, to 1967, the year of his death, when he published The Panther and the Lash, Hughes would write 16 books of poems, two novels, seven collections of short stories, two autobiographies, five works of nonfiction, and nine children’s books he would edit nine anthologies of poetry, folklore, short fiction, and humor. With a career that spanned the Harlem Renaissance of the twenties and the Black Arts movement of the sixties, Langston Hughes was the most prolific black poet of his era. This Black family aims for a new life by moving from a tenement on Chicago’s South Side to a middle-class white neighborhood. Hansberry’s play directly questions the possibility of achieving the American Dream of upward mobility in the face of racial oppression.ĭirector Leontyne Mblele-Mbong immerses us in the Younger family’s cramped 50’s apartment, with Nina Simone barreling from the vintage radio. In his eloquent poem “Harlem,” Langston Hughes asks, “What happens to a dream deferred? / Does it dry up / like a raisin in the sun?” Lorraine Hansberry selected those words for the title of her 1959 masterpiece drama. Lorraine Hansberry Revival Reminds Us of Our Opportunities While I didn’t click with one of the previous Alice Oseman books I tried (it does a mechanics thing that drives me bonkers and made keeping up with it impossible), I had a lot of hope for this one. Needless to say, I’ve been anxiously waiting for the US release of Loveless for ages. But Georgia’s determined to get her life right, with the help of (and despite the major drama of) her friends.
